Andrew, Stagg esports teams earn state tourney wins

The electronic sports teams at Victor J. Andrew and Amos Alonzo Stagg High School came up winners at the IHSA tournament, winning two state championships and other top finishes while competing against 50 other schools. It’s the fourth straight year District 230 eSports teams have won state titles.

Winning the state title for Super Smash Brothers were undefeated Stagg junior and captain Yusef Hassan, junior Mohamed Ahmed, seniors John Valdes and Isaac Ferniza and freshman Abdullah Ahmed. Stagg senior Ryan McNulty earned his second consecutive state title in Madden NFL.

The Andrew team, made up of junior Owen Murray, senior and captain Joseph Schultz and sophomores Nathan Beitia, Gerald Udarbe and Cody Truong, earned a fourth-place finish in Super Smash Bros. Stagg Rocket League won fifth place, Stagg Mario Kart earned fifth place and Andrew Mario Kart took seventh place.

Most commonly, esports competitions are multiplayer online video game contests, often incorporating live broadcasts with commentary.

Event aids Midlothian residents with pets

Pet owners can get tips and some freebies at a pet safety event planned for 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.June 6 at the Midlothian Police Station, 14301 S. Pulaski Road.

The department will provide free supplies, pet food and literature on animal safety and animal retention for Midlothian residents in need.

Donations of pet food are needed. Anyone who donates will receive a voucher for a free Animal ID tag, free microchip and vaccinations, thanks to the South Suburban Humane Society. Information is found at 708-385-2534.

Oak Lawn Children’s Museum hosts magician

Magician Kevin Kelly presents a show for members of the Children’s Museum in Oak Lawn at 7 p.m. June 5 at the museum, 5100 Museum Drive.

The performance, supported by the Marc Dunworth Foundation for the Performing Arts, will include pulling a live rabbit out of a hat, levitating a volunteer and other tricks designed to amaze children and adults.

Members will pay $10 per family to see the show. Families are invited to play at 6 p.m. before the show. There’s still time to become a member of the museum, which is offering a new 90 Days of Play membership for up to four people for $99. Details are at www.cmoaklawn.org or 708-423-6709.

Orland Park library displays pen and ink art

A meet the artist event at 7 p.m. June 5 at the Orland Park Public Library, 14921 S. Ravinia Ave., will introduce artist George Maly, whose pen and ink work will be on display June 1-29.

After years of creating art, he became interested in creating artworking using one continuous line, eventually incorporating colored pens in his pieces.

The exhibit, found on the library’s second floor, is a sample of his work and can be viewed when the library is open: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Suburban heritage tour planned in South Holland

The Midwest Underground Railroad Network offers a south suburban heritage tour from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p;.m. June 6, starting at the Sandridge Nature Center, 15891 Paxton Ave. in South Holland.

Reservations are required for this free event, sponsored by the Forest Preserves of Cook County, which features experts from the organization who will talk about the story of the hundreds of escaped slaves who traversed through the area south of Chicago seeking freedom in the North before the Civil War. Attendees also will learn about Great Migration stories in Chicago Heights, Robbins and Ford Heights.
