A Wauconda-area man was electrocuted over the weekend as he trimmed tree branches near a power line, according to the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities identified him Tuesday as Edward Topel, 67.

Topel was on a ladder trimming branches in his yard in the 28500 block of North Jackson at about 3:55 p.m. Saturday when he came into contact with live power lines.

Authorities were dispatched to the scene, along with ComEd crews who shut down the power so first responders could gain access to Topel. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

An autopsy indicated that he died from thermal and electrical injuries, the coroner’s office said.

The incident remains under investigation.
