A Cook County judge on Saturday ordered jail custody for an 18-year-old man who prosecutors claimed shot a 65-year-old man as he sat socializing in a North Lawndale alley with longtime friends.

Cordale Carroll, also of North Lawndale, was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of aggravated discharge of a weapon from a vehicle, according to Chicago police.

The victim is the father of former Dolton mayor and Thornton Township supervisor Tiffany Henyard, though authorities made no mention of this connection in court documents. Carroll was arrested Friday afternoon by police and the U.S. Marshal Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force in the 1200 block of South Damen Avenue, after he was identified as one of the people who participated in the March 25 shooting in the 1300 block of South Kedzie Avenue, police said.

Before Judge Rivanda Doss Beal for a Saturday detention hearing, prosecutors detailed how the victim sat on the trunk of his vehicle chatting with friends when Carroll and two others approached the group and opened fire without any apparent provocation or words exchanged.

One of the shots struck the victim in his face and neck and lodged in his collarbone, prosecutors said. The victim’s companions took cover from the flurry of gunshots behind their vehicles.

Several surveillance cameras in the area captured the masked gunmen fleeing the shooting, with at least one of them capturing Carroll’s uncovered face while holding a handgun with a laser sight, according to prosecutors. Police used the video image to create a bulletin that led to one civilian and three police officers identifying Carroll, authorities said.

Eleven days after the shooting, Carroll was arrested for a separate felony possession case where police seized a black 9mm Glock. Prosecutors said tests run on that weapon tied it to shell casings from the March shooting.

Following his arrest, Carroll didn’t make a statement to authorities, prosecutors said.

Citing what she called an unprovoked attack on older people, Judge Doss Beal approved prosecutors’ petition to hold Carroll in custody pending trial, calling him a danger to the community.

Tiffany Henyard could not be reached for comment Saturday. Following the March shooting, Henyard thanked well-wishers on social media during her father’s recovery. Days before the hearing, Henyard declared victory in an uncontested Republican primary race for the Fulton County board of commissioners in Georgia.

Carroll is scheduled to return to court next Friday.
