Lake County authorities have identified the two people – one of whom was a toddler – killed in a weekend crash in Highland Park.
Joan Scaccia, 73, of Wilmette, and 21-month-old Andre Paz of Round Lake, were killed in the Saturday afternoon crash on U.S. Route 41.
The child was riding in a 2026 Hyundai Sonata that was headed north on Route 41 when it collided with a 2006 Toyota Sienna being driven by Scaccia, police said.
Scaccia was headed west on Park Avenue and was turning left onto southbound Route 41 when the collision happened. Firefighters had to extricate her from her vehicle before she was transported to a hospital.
Paz was in the rear compartment of the Sonata and suffered critical injuries. The child was brought to Highland Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The collision remains under investigation by local police and the Major Crash Assistance Team.
