Officers found Ayed Mdanat when they responded to a report of a person shot at 10:45 p.m. Monday on the 10400 block of South Austin Avenue.
Ayed Mdanat was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead about half an hour later, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, which listed his cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds.
“Responding officers quickly identified the offender as the victim’s son, 18-year-old Sami Mdanat, who had fled the area on foot,” Oak Lawn police said in a news release.
Ayed and Sami Mdanat lived at the same address, according to court records and the medical examiner’s office.
Prosecutors said Sami Mdanat got into an argument with his father Monday night. His mother was also home at the time.
After the argument, Sami Mdanat went to his room and called his cousin on FaceTime, telling him that “If (Ayed Mdanat) comes through the door, I am going to shoot him,” prosecutors said.
Mdanat’s cousin could hear pounding and yelling at the door over the call before Ayed Mdanat entered the room and Sami Mdanat shot him several times, prosecutors said.
Cook County Judge William Fahy ordered Mdanat detained in custody while his case progresses. His next court date is May 29.

Fahy also ordered Kassem detained, saying the nature and circumstances of the case create too great a risk for his release under “even the strictest conditions.” He included details that Kassem “is alleged to have brutally beaten and stabbed” his father, according to court documents.
Police responded to Samir Kassem’s home on the 14100 block of Concord Drive at 6:30 p.m. April 29, after a 911 call reporting a death in the home.
Kassem’s next hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on May 29 at the Bridgeview courthouse.
