A man is facing federal charges for allegedly shooting at U.S. Marshals when they came to arrest him in Gary last month.
Brian “Shug” Billups, 46, of Chicago, was charged May 1 in the U.S. District Court of Northern Indiana with assault of federal officers and employees and use of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
He is in custody. A court hearing is scheduled for June 8.
His lawyer Richard Kling declined to comment Thursday.
Police arrived just after 7 a.m. April 30 at a home on the 700 block of Matthews Street in Gary to arrest Billups for pending warrants for violating supervised release out of federal court in Chicago.
As one group of officers gathered at the south door, Billups allegedly fired shots at police near the home’s east door. They called a SWAT team, who broke down a door with an armored car.
Police said Billups damaged a drone they sent to find him.
Billups told police he was firing warning shots with a gun he slept with under a pillow. They found the gun on a bedroom floor. They also found bullet holes in a house across the street.
