A 16-year-old was arrested and a loaded handgun was recovered after a foot pursuit April 19 in Aurora, according to the Aurora Police Department.

At around 6:36 p.m. last Sunday, Aurora police investigators assigned to the Special Operations Group said they saw the juvenile illegally riding an electric scooter in the roadway near Front Street and Jefferson Street on the city’s East Side, a news release from the police department said.

Investigators attempted to make contact with the juvenile, the news release said, but he allegedly refused commands to stop, fleeing on the scooter initially and then abandoning it and continuing on foot. Officers pursued him through nearby residential and parking lot areas before taking him into custody, the release said.

Following the arrest, officers recovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun, which contained a magazine loaded with 13 live rounds of ammunition, from a cross-body bag the 16-year-old was wearing, police said.

The teen has since been charged with three felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and a misdemeanor charge for resisting/obstructing a peace officer, the news release from the police department said. He was then accepted for detention at the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.

No further information will be released, the department said, because the individual is a juvenile.
