A Zion man has been sentenced to 67 years in prison for fatally shooting a man who was sitting in his car.
Jamonte Davis, 28, was found guilty in December for first-degree murder in the killing of Sergio Berrios, 42. The victim, who lived in Beach Park, was shot to death on Oct. 3, 2022, in his car in the 1300 block of Chestnut Street in Waukegan.
Davis was sentenced Thursday by Lake County Judge Christopher Lombardo, who imposed a 42-year sentence for murder plus a 25-year enhancement for the use of a firearm.
“As we heard from Sergio’s loved ones at the hearing, Sergio was deeply loved as a father, husband, brother, uncle and friend,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. “This tragic shooting should have never happened. Now, this murderer will likely spend the rest of his life in prison because of his calculated decisions.”
Prosecutors said Davis planned the attack, including buying a stolen car and attempting to conceal his identity by turning his sweatshirt inside out. Davis’s acts, they said, were “gruesome” and “cold-blooded.”
Authorities said Davis thought Berrios was someone else when he shot him numerous times. As he fled after the shooting, Davis dropped two cell phones, which were among the evidence used to tie him to the murder.
