Police are investigating a shooting Thursday afternoon in Mason Park,  located at 1600 Church Street in Evanston, according to a report from Evanston Police Commander Chelsea Brown.

Officers responded to a report of a shooting at the park around 12:15 p.m. on April 23, according to Evanston Police Department via social media.

Police are actively investigating the shooting, but Brown told the Pioneer Press no injuries have been reported, with “no victims at this point.”

After reviewing video footage from the incident, detectives determined that “two small groups exchanged gunfire in the park before fleeing on foot,” according to the news release.

Brown said there is not believed to be a threat to the public, but that officers are “reviewing all available evidence.”

Police contacted Evanston Township High School, which is near Mason Park, to notify the school of the incident.

ETHS subsequently issued a soft lockdown for students and administrators, securing all exterior doors and windows to the school while continuing normal operations inside the building.

There is no direct threat inside the building, school administrators clarified over social media. Police said they will increase patrols during school arrival and dismissal times for the remainder of the week.

Brown confirmed that there is no one in custody regarding the incident.

Officers urged the public to avoid Mason Park and the surrounding area while the department continues to investigate.

The reported shooting comes just two days after Evanston police responded to reports of shots fired on the 700 block of Howard Street

, where a man reportedly suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

He was later taken by first responders via ambulance to a local hospital for treatment.

No persons of interest are in custody over the Tuesday incident, police said.
