A man was killed and three women were wounded Wednesday afternoon when they were struck by gunfire in the heart of the Little Village neighborhood, according to Chicago police.
In the city’s latest shooting involving three or more victims, a 46-year-old man and three women — one 47, one 25-year-old and one 42-year-old — were standing in the 3400 block of West 26th Street just after 4:30 p.m. when they were wounded, police said in a preliminary statement.
According to a police report obtained by the Tribune, the four victims were standing at a produce stand near the intersection of 26th Street and South St. Louis Avenue when a white Honda sedan turned onto St. Louis from 26th Street. An unknown shooter got out of the car, approached the man and shot him multiple times with a handgun.
The man suffered gunshot wounds to his face and body and was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. He was identified Thursday night as Antonio Padilla, of Little Village, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Padilla died of multiple gunshot wounds in a homicide, the medical examiner’s office ruled.
The 42-year-old woman self-transported to Mount Sinai in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the lower back. The 25-year-old woman was struck in the face and taken to Mount Sinai in fair condition. The 47-year-old woman suffered a wound to the arm and was taken to the hospital in good condition.
Ogden (10th) District police recovered 27 shell casings from the scene, per the police report. Later Wednesday afternoon, Englewood (7th) District police reported that they had found a white Honda that had just been reported as stolen set on fire near the intersection of South Ada and West 74th streets, beginning a probe into the vehicle’s possible connection to the shooting.
Police released an alert Thursday night seeking help identifying the three gunmen. The individuals were described as wearing dark hoodies and dark colored pants, ranging between 5-foot-10 and 6 feet, weighing between 160 to 180 pounds. The alert contained an image of one of the suspected gunmen that appeared to be captured from surveillance video.
Police have grappled with an uptick in homicides this year. Through Friday, the city saw 119 homicides, 13 more than the same time last year, according to city data compiled by the Tribune.
