Jeff MacNelly’s editorial cartoon on filing taxes is perhaps the most popular and surely the funniest single cartoon in Tribune history.

The editorial board has periodically rerun it as a Tax Day treat, but we do so with particular relish this year, since this is the 50th anniversary of this particular pen-and-ink masterpiece from the late MacNelly, a withering satire of Internal Revenue Service bureaucracy and needless complexity.

Sure, we’re now in an age of TurboTax and online filing, but MacNelly’s point is as apropos as ever.

RIP, the hand-filled Form 1040. But we all still need a laugh every year on April 15.
