A 28-year-old North Aurora man has been charged after a 69-year-old pedestrian was injured in a hit-and-run crash in Batavia on Friday morning, the Batavia Police Department said.

The crash occurred around 5:35 a.m. on Friday at South River Street and East Wilson Street in Batavia, the department said in a news release.

The preliminary investigation indicates that an SUV was traveling northbound on South River Street, turning left onto westbound Wilson Street at the intersection, the news release said. A 69-year-old man, who was crossing in the crosswalk with the walk signal from the north side of Wilson to the south side, was then hit in the crosswalk by the SUV, police said.

The SUV left the scene after the crash, according to the police department, and the driver did not call the authorities, render aid or report the accident, the release said. The pedestrian, who was lying on the roadway following the crash, was taken by medics to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police officers were ultimately able to identify a suspect vehicle using security cameras in the area, and early Saturday morning located a black Toyota Highlander matching the description of the vehicle from the incident, the news release said. Following investigation, the driver of the vehicle was identified as Jacob P.G. Belarmino, 28, of North Aurora.

According to the police department, Belarmino has since been charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident, which is a felony, as well as charges of failure to report an accident, failure to give aid or information and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Any witnesses to the crash or anyone with additional information is asked to contact the Batavia Police Department Investigations Division at 630-454-2500.
