During his tenure, he played a key role in major initiatives, including the District 1860 mixed-use development from planning and zoning through construction, the Carrington senior housing development project, and the Lincolnwood Town Center concept plan, the release said.
Most recently, he served as the Deputy Director of Community Development for the Village of Glenview, where he gained additional experience that he will now bring to Lincolnwood, the release said. Before joining Lincolnwood in 2017, Hammel worked in the private sector with several planning consulting firms, where he contributed to a wide range of comprehensive plans, corridor and transportation plans, and zoning updates.
According to the release, he brings more than 25 years of experience across both the private and public sectors.
“I’m very excited to return to Lincolnwood in the role of Community Development Director,” Hammel said. “My previous time with Lincolnwood was very satisfying, both personally and professionally, highlighted by the development of District 1860. Now, as the community prepares for its next great opportunity, I have the privilege of rejoining the Lincolnwood team and working with local residents and businesses.”
Hammel holds a Master of City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Studies in Architecture from the University at Buffalo. He is a certified planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
“Doug brings strong technical and leadership skills as well as incredible institutional knowledge back to Lincolnwood as our new Director,” Anne Marie Gaura, Village Manager, said in the release. “He will be able to take his experience in managing complex development projects to immediately step in to take the lead on the redevelopment of the Lincolnwood Town Center.”
“Having worked with Doug during his time in Lincolnwood, especially on the District 1860 project, I’m excited to see him return as our new Community Development Director,” added Mayor Jesal Patel.
