Several residents were displaced, and a commercial storage facility office was closed, after a fire Monday that left a two-story building on Aurora’s far East Side uninhabitable, according to the Aurora Fire Department.
At around 10:55 a.m. on Monday, the fire department responded to a reported structure fire in the 3600 block of Gabrielle Lane, a news release from the fire department said. Upon arrival, crews found heavy smoke and fire conditions on the first floor and fire extending to the second floor and attic of a two-story mixed-use building serving as both a commercial storage facility office and a residence.
The incident was ultimately upgraded to a second alarm due to the conditions observed upon arrival and as crews worked to bring the fire under control, the department said. Firefighters advanced hose lines and initiated an interior fire attack, while truck company personnel performed ventilation. Crews conducted primary searches while working to contain the fire and look for fire extension throughout the building, according to the release.
The fire was ultimately brought under control within about 15 minutes of the department’s arrival, the news release said.
All of the building’s occupants were able to evacuate before firefighters entered, and no individuals were found during searches, the fire department said. There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported.
The building, however, was deemed uninhabitable, according to the fire department, resulting in the closure of the commercial storage office. The property owner is providing housing assistance to three displaced residents.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the fire department said.
