Evanston police responded to a reported disturbance involving a man with a knife at 415 Premier Apartments on Thursday, a multi-unit building in the 400 block of Howard Street.

Commander Chelsea Brown confirmed to the Pioneer Press that officers received the call around 2:30 p.m. and upon arrival, learned that a man was inside the elevator wielding a knife and swinging it at others, including two maintenance workers who were able to avoid injury.

Police were able to apprehend the unidentified man, in his 40s, using “less-lethal” force methods in an effort to take him into custody safely.

The man eventually dropped the knife and was placed in handcuffs, according to the police report.

He was later taken by the Evanston Fire Department to a local hospital with minor injuries reported.

No victims or officers reported injuries as a result of the incident.

Detectives are assisting in the ongoing investigation. The man remains in police custody, according to Brown.

The 400 block of Howard Street was temporarily closed on Thursday due to traffic congestion caused by the emergency vehicle response.
