The Skokie Police Department is investigating a string of vehicle burglaries that occurred overnight on March 31, in central Skokie, according to the police report.

Police said at least two offenders were involved in the burglaries, which occurred between 2 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on the morning of Tuesday, March 31.

A majority of the burglaries involved breaking into the vehicles’ windows. Items taken in the burglaries included cash and “items that can be easily carried,” according to the report.

Skokie Police Commander John Moersfelder said that evidence of the burglaries, including surveillance footage, has been collected from multiple incident scenes on Tuesday. Technicians and detectives are working to use the footage to investigate leads on identifying the suspects and taking further legal action.

The investigation is ongoing, Moersfelder said.

Skokie Police issued several precautions residents can take to minimize future targeted burglary attempts:

  • Residents should park their cars in a well-lit area, near motion sensor lights, if possible, and away from bushes and shrubs
  • Always lock your vehicle doors and make sure windows are closed
  • Remove valuables from your car before leaving, including vehicle fobs, excess items or anything that can be viewed inside the car from an outside window
  • Make sure vehicle alarms and video systems are activated

Police said if residents do experience a future burglary, contact 9-1-1 immediately and wait for a police officer to respond, rather than approaching or confronting any offenders.

Residents are advised to avoid touching or entering their cars until police have responded to the scene.
