Calvin Woods, 34, of Matteson pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder in the 2023 fatal shooting of Travon Mackie, 30, of Chicago.

Woods was sentenced to 20 years in prison by Cook County Judge Angela Petrone, according to the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

Illinois State Police officers found Mackie with life-threatening gunshot wounds at the scene of a multivehicle accident on northbound Interstate 94 near Dolton Road Aug. 28, 2023, according to a news release.

Two cars, an Audi and a Toyota, had crashed along the concrete median wall. Mackie, the driver of the Toyota, had been shot multiple times, while the other car was abandoned, according to state police.

Mackie was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead two days later, according to prosecutors.

Prosecutors said multiple shots had been fired from the Audi into Mackie’s car as the cars were side-by-side, and both then crashed into the concrete median barrier. Mackie was unarmed and no weapon was found in his car, prosecutors said.

Woods was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Mackie’s death in February 2024, according to court records.

Woods “believed the circumstances to be such that they would justify or exonerate the killing but his belief was unreasonable,” according to court records reducing the charge from first- to second-degree murder.

According to court documents approving his pre-trial detention, Woods was already a felon and was on electronic monitoring in a federal narcotics case at the time of the shooting.

Woods’ attorney was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
