A man found unresponsive on an Avondale street last week who died over the weekend was the victim of an assault in an apparent homicide, according to an autopsy performed Wednesday.

The victim was identified as Alexander C. Kazanowski, 25, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

The victim was found with head injuries lying on the street in the 3900 block of West Belmont Avenue around 3:20 a.m. on March 24, according to Chicago police.

Kazanowski, who lived about three-tenths of a mile from where he was found, was initially taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead on Saturday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The autopsy found that Kazanowski died from blunt head trauma in an assault that was ruled a homicide, officials said.

Police on Wednesday had no updated details, saying the initial death investigation was being handled by Grand Central (Area 5) detectives.
