A man who barricaded himself inside a Joliet home for hours died late Monday, authorities said.
The man, who was in his 40s, died from an “apparent self-inflicted” gunshot wound following an eight-hour standoff. Authorities were not identifying the man.
Authorities were attempting to pull over the man, who authorities said was wanted on three Class X felonies for drug-related charges.
According to a news release from the Will County Sheriff’s Office, authorities from Will County and the U.S. Marshals’ Great Lakes Regional Fugitive Task Force attempted a “vehicle containment technique” that failed, allowing the vehicle to escape and crash into a fence in the 200 block of St. Jude Avenue in Joliet around 12:50 p.m. Monday.
Authorities said a preliminary investigation indicates the man, who was armed, then fled on foot and entered a home, which was not his, in the 200 block of Romayne Avenue. A police canine unit tracked the man to the home.
The situation prompted two schools and one school district administrative office building to go into lockdown mode for a few hours.
Members of the Will County SWAT tactical team and the Will County crisis and hostage negotiation team attempted for hours to de-escalate the situation through negotiations and conversations with the male subject, some of those conversations including his family members, authorities said.
Authorities breached the home around 9 p.m. and found the male subject with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased.
Detectives did recover a handgun inside the home, authorities said. The Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force is handling the investigation.
