A DuPage County judge over the weekend denied the release of a west suburban man accused of fleeing from police on a moped while under the influence, authorities said, reaching speeds of 85 mph.
Dillon Burgett, 34, of Glendale Heights, faces two felony counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, two counts of misdemeanor DUI and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses, according to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.
Last Friday, a Bloomingdale police officer responded to a panic alarm called at a local Circle K gas station just before 1 a.m., the state’s attorney’s office said. When he arrived, the officer saw Burgett exit the station’s store and stumble into the parking lot. Burgett then proceeded to yell at both police and the store clerk, who had followed him out, prosecutors said.
After ignoring the officer’s requests to stop, Burgett got on a moped, fled the station and led police on a high-speed chase. During the pursuit, prosecutors said Burgett fled east into Addison, ran a red light then took the moped onto I-355, where, traveling southbound.
Burgett exited near Lombard and drove west, weaving in and out of traffic until he turned into a Speedway gas station, where he jumped the curb and attempted to re-enter traffic but ultimately lost control of the moped, per prosecutors. Officers then took Burgett into custody.
His alleged blood-alcohol level at the time of arrest allegedly was 0.206%.
DuPage State’s Attorney Bob Berlin, in a statement, said the county has “no tolerance for anyone who ignores officers’ commands to pull over and instead attempts to flee, putting the officers involved and the public at risk.”
“What I find particularly troubling in this case,” Berlin continued, “are the allegations that Mr. Burgett led authorities on a dangerous high-speed chase on a major expressway while illegally operating a moped and drunk.”
Burgett appeared for a detention hearing on Saturday, where he was denied release. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 4.
