U-46 TO SPEND $1.9M ON SOUTH ELGIN HS DOORS

The District U-46 School Board is to vote on April 13 to award a $1.9 million contract to Northwest Contractors Inc. to replace exterior doors and to secure the vestibule at South Elgin High School.

Many of the existing exterior doors are original to the 24-year-old building and show significant rust and corrosion, according to information presented at the board’s March 16 meeting. The structural integrity of the doors and frames is deteriorating and could eventuall prevent them from closing, latching and securing properly, officials said.

Staff members believe their condition can be attributed to age-related wear, long-term use of salt during the winter and the limited thickness of the material.

The contract also calls for identifying, inspecting and reprogramming all existing security devices based on their specific type and location. This work will produce a comprehensive device inventory, updated drawings and zone maps, according to the project summary.
