A Hammond man got 12 ½ years in federal prison Thursday for drug dealing.
Jeremiah Hicks, 38, pleaded guilty in November to distributing heroin and cocaine.
U.S. District Judge Gretchen Lund sentenced Hicks to 151 months in prison, then three years on supervised release.
Hicks sold crack cocaine and heroin twice to undercover informants in Hammond in August 2023. Police found a gun, cocaine and some cash when they executed a search warrant at his home. Assistant U.S. Attorney Caitlin M. Padula wrote in court filings.
Hicks told investigators he only had the gun to protect himself.
Defense lawyer Michael Campbell wrote Hicks didn’t have the gun when he sold drugs and “does not have a propensity for violence.”
“The Defendant has forfeited over 12 years of his life because he chose to peddle this poison in our communities. We appreciate the hard work of the professionals at the BATFE and the Hammond Police Department that went into the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of this repeat offender,” U.S. Attorney Adam Mildred said in a release.
CHICAGO MAN GETS 6 YEARS FOR DEALING DRUGS
A Chicago man got six years for drug dealing.
DeAndre Johnson, 42, pleaded guilty in August to conspiracy to distribute 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.
After federal prison, he will serve two years on supervised release.
Johnson dealt drugs a half-dozen times to an undercover informant from October 2023 to March 2024, Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Toth wrote in court filings.
Defense lawyer James Thiros wrote Johnson was only the drug runner, or deliveryman.
His co-defendant Fernando Porras got 8 years in December.
