An Aurora man has been sentenced to six and a half years in prison for two incidents of battery to law enforcement, according to the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

According to statements presented in court by Kane County State’s Attorney Jamie Mosser and Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Picton, the Aurora Police Department on Aug. 6, 2024, received a call describing a suspicious person pacing north and south along North Farnsworth Avenue near the intersection with Coolidge Avenue, a news release from the State’s Attorney’s Office said.

An Aurora police officer who responded to the scene observed a man matching the description, later identified as Zackery L. Moore, 36, of Aurora, according to the release.

The officer approached Moore and gave him multiple orders to stop, which Moore ignored, the news release said. The officer then attempted to grab hold of Moore to stop him, and Moore struck the officer in the left side of the face before fleeing and running eastbound on Coolidge Avenue, officials said in the release.

The officer then radioed for support, the State’s Attorney’s Office said, and additional Aurora police officers arrived. Moore was taken into custody near Parkside Avenue despite continued resistance, according to the release, and the officer struck by Moore was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for multiple facial fractures, police said.

Following the incident, Moore was detained in the Kane County jail pending trial, the State’s Attorney’s Office said.

Then, on Jan. 23, 2025, Moore refused to lock down in his jail cell after returning from a court date, the news release said. Kane County Sheriff’s officers observed him acting agitated and calling them derogatory slurs, and he refused repeated orders from officers to allow them to secure him in his cell, according to the release. Moore ultimately pushed his cell door open and grabbed hold of an officer by the waist and underarm area, pushing the officer back into a table and refusing to let go until he was stunned using a Taser, officials said.

In December, a jury convicted Moore for aggravated battery to a peace officer causing great bodily harm and resisting a peace officer, per the news release.

Moore has now been sentenced to six and a half years in state prison, the release said. He is eligible for day-for-day sentencing, and receives credit for 576 days served in the Kane County jail.
