A six-bedroom, 12,076-square-foot, colonial-style mansion in Hinsdale that once changed hands for more than $6 million sold several months ago for $3.8 million.

Built in 1951 and situated on a 1.9-acre property — a size that is rare for Hinsdale — the 19-room mansion has been reworked and expanded.

It has 11 bathrooms, nine fireplaces, a first-floor primary bedroom suite, an office, an elevator and a lower level with a pub and billiard room, a second kitchen and a guest suite.

Outside on the property are a pool and a pool house.

In 2002, Doris Christopher, founder of the Addison-based Pampered Chef kitchenware company, and her husband, Jay, paid about $6.4 million for the house — a Hinsdale record at that time. Prior to the couple’s purchase, the mansion had been listed for $10.9 million — also a Hinsdale record asking price.

The Christophers sold the mansion for $3.3 million in 2014 — four years after they first had listed it. The 2014 buyers then put some work into the mansion, and placed it on the market in 2019 for nearly $6 million.

They reduced their asking price by more than $2 million by 2023 before eventually finding the buyers, a couple from Naperville.

Mimi Collins of Jameson Sotheby’s International Realty represented the buyers. She called the home “a great, well-built house” that “needed a bit of updating and a refresh.”

“That can be a little intimidating to some people to take on,” she told Elite Street.

Collins said a much earlier owner assembled the mansion’s lot with three other adjoining lots to allow for an expansion of the mansion, along with room for a pool and a pool house.

The mansion had a $79,755 property tax bill in the 2024 tax year.
