A church and a home were struck by gunfire, but no injuries were reported, Sunday morning on Aurora’s East Side, the Aurora Police Department said on Tuesday.

At around 6:50 a.m. on Sunday, Aurora’s ShotSpotter system alerted to six rounds fired in the 100 block of North State Street, the police department said in a news release.

Shortly after, officers learned that a nearby home and a church had been struck by gunfire, the news release said. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.

Officers observed at least two individuals fleeing the area, which prompted a brief foot pursuit, the department said. A juvenile was apprehended near Galena Boulevard and Rose Street, and, based on developing information, officers established two perimeters as they searched for additional individuals who may have been involved in the incident and a firearm, according to the release. The department’s K9 Unit, Drone Unit, patrol officers and supervisors responded to assist with the effort.

During the course of the investigation, officers developed information that indicated that firearms connected to the incident had been placed inside a vehicle parked in the area, the news release said.

Officers obtained and executed a search warrant for that vehicle, per the release, and said they recovered three firearms: a Glock 9mm equipped with an extended magazine and fully automatic conversion device that was reported stolen out of East Chicago, Indiana; a Taurus 9mm handgun that was reported stolen out of Bolingbrook; and a Bryco Model 59 9mm, along with extra magazines and ammunition.

One adult and two juveniles were ultimately taken into custody in connection with the incident, but, due to the complexity of the case and ongoing forensic review, were later released pending further investigative action, the police department said.

Detectives are continuing to analyze evidence, review additional video and pursue investigative leads to determine who is responsible for the discharge of the firearm and the possession of the weapons that were recovered, the news release from the department said. The recovered firearms are undergoing forensic processing and will be submitted to the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network for ballistic comparison and analysis.
