ELGIN CHAMBER HONORS VOLUNTEERS, BUSINESSES

The Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce will honor local leaders, volunteers and businesses at its annual meeting from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the Grand Ballroom at the Grand Victoria Casino, 250 S. Grove Ave. in Elgin.

Award recipients are:

  • Leadership Award: Elgin Mayor David Kaptain;
  • Community Partner Award: Elgin Community College;
  • Small Business Award: Cross Kicks Fitness;
  • Large Business Award: Karas Restaurant Group;
  • Business Development Award: Faber-Castell Cosmetics;
  • Volunteer Award: Denise Raleigh;
  • Entrepreneur of the Year: Daria Shulishova, Desserts Without Regrets;
  • Citizens of the Year: Dan and Karen Fox.

“Our awardees represent innovators, leaders and changemakers who are shaping our community in meaningful ways. We are proud to recognize their achievements,” chamber CEO/president Carol Gieske said in a news release.

MAPLE SUGARING DAYS AT CREEK BEND CENTER

Maple Sugaring Days will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8, at Creek Bend Nature Center in LeRoy Oakes Forest Preserve, 37W700 Dean St., St. Charles.

Attendees can learn folklore and how to identify and tap a maple tree, watch syrup being made over an open fire, and try their had at drilling and setting a maple tap, according to the Kane County Forest Preserve District website.

Hot cocoa, ice cream with a drizzle of syrup, and maple syrup will be available for purchase. Riverlands Brewing will be selling Maple River Brown Ale under a heated tent.

ELGIN MASTER CHORALE PERFORMING WITH ESO

Elgin Symphony Orchestra will present choral music and theatrical drama at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at The Hemmens Cultural Center, 45 Symphony Way, Elgin.

The orchestra will be joined by the Elgin Master Chorale and guest vocalists Laura Strickling and Jesse Blumberg, according to a news release.

Featured pieces include Valerie Coleman’s “Seven O’Clock Shout,” written during the COVID-19 pandemic, Edvard Grieg’s “Peer Gynt” and Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem.” ESO Music Director Chad Goodman will give a talk one hour prior to each show.
