Five people were injured Wednesday evening in a mass shooting on Chicago’s South Side, according to authorities.
A Chicago police spokesperson confirmed to the Tribune that multiple people were shot at the 6600 block of South Stony Island Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood on Wednesday night.
Just after 7 p.m., five people were transported to area hospitals from three separate locations, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt.
Three people were transported to the hospital after driving themselves to a fire station on East 67th Street, Merritt said. Another person was transported from the 1500 block of East 69th Place, while a fifth person was transported from Stony Island and East Marquette Road. Citing medical privacy laws, Merritt would not provide details on the victims’ conditions, ages or genders.
Chicago police reported Thursday morning a man suffered a wound to his head and was in critical condition. Another man, 18, was wounded to his back and left leg. A third victim, 19, suffered a leg wound, and another 19-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the back. A fifth man, 29, who was reported shot at 69th Street and Harper Avenue, was connected to the Stony Island victims. All of the victims were treated at UChicago Medicine.
Police were investigating multiple crime scenes. As of Thursday, eight people where in custody and being questioned by detectives, according to police sources.
