Two 17-year-olds were arrested Friday night and a loaded handgun was recovered following a vehicle pursuit in Aurora, according to the Aurora Police Department.

At around 11 p.m. on Friday, patrol officers received information that a blue Kia Sportage that had been recently reported as stolen from a neighboring community had entered Aurora traveling south on Farnsworth Avenue, a news release from the police department said.

Officers located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, the department said, but the vehicle fled, starting a brief pursuit with assistance from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. The pursuit ultimately ended when the vehicle got stuck in an open field near Fifth Avenue and Hill Avenue in Aurora, police said.

Both of the individuals in the car ran away, but officers quickly apprehended a 17-year-old from Bensenville, also recovering during the arrest a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen by the Round Lake Beach Police Department, per the news release.

The second 17-year-old, from Addison, was ultimately located hiding in the 300 block of Kendall Street following a coordinated grid search involving Aurora patrol officers, Kane County Sheriff’s deputies and the Aurora Police Department’s drone unit and K9 unit, the release said.

Both of the individuals were taken into custody without further incident, according to the department.

The 17-year-old from Bensenville has since been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated fleeing and eluding and resisting a peace officer, the news release said. The 17-year-old from Addison, who the police department said is a documented street gang member, has been charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle and resisting a peace officer.

The two individuals were taken to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center, where a detention hearing will be held to determine continued custody, the police department said.

The investigation remains ongoing, the news release noted. The police department is encouraging anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Aurora Police Department Investigations Division at 630- 256-5500.
