Naperville’s Secretary of State DMV has moved locations.
As of Friday, Nov. 21, the Department of Motor Vehicles in Naperville will now operate at 1771 W. Diehl Road as an appointment-only location, with hours of operation from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7:30 a.m. to noon Saturday. The new location welcomed its first batch of customers at noon on Friday.
The move from the old location at 931 W. 75th Street is part of a broader effort by the Illinois Secretary of State’s office to update and modernize DMVs throughout the state, including reducing time for people waiting in line.
Neighboring Aurora received an updated DMV location in April, which is twice the size of the city’s previous location and included services not traditionally offered at other DMVs. So far, 23 Illinois DMV locations have been upgraded and modernized, according to the Secretary of State’s office.
“We had been in that space for over 30 years,” a spokesperson for the Illinois Secretary of State’s office said, referring to the Naperville location. “As the population has changed, the need has become such that we’ve outgrown that facility.”
The new facility in Naperville is 3,000 more square feet than its previous spot and features more parking spaces for customers.
Another major upgrade to the new facility is the combination of the driver services and vehicle services into one station. At the old location, driver services and vehicle services would be at two separate stations, which meant that a customer coming into the DMV would often need to be sent to multiple stations before being fully served.
Through this new model, a customer can conduct their business all at one station “versus having to go to a station for cash sharing, go to a station to buy their sticker, go to a station for getting a driver service,” the spokesperson said.
Four additional staff have also been added to the new location. All the staff will be cross-trained to conduct the same work, further increasing efficiency for day-to-day operations.
“You (previously) had 65 staffers and 32 staff did drivers, 33 staff did vehicles,” the spokesperson said. “In the new facility, all 69 staff will do both drivers and vehicles, which is essentially going to increase the amount of appointments and services to the community.”
The difference between the old facility and the new facility, the spokesperson said, is like “night and day.”
“Customers coming to the Naperville location are going to see a dramatic difference from the old location to the new location,” the spokesperson said. “And more importantly, are going to be able to reduce the time that they spend getting the services that they need.”
