A 55-year-old woman was fatally stabbed Wednesday afternoon during a domestic fight at an apartment in the Avondale neighborhood, Chicago police said.

Police reported the woman was stabbed in the face and neck in the 2800 block of North Woodard Street at approximately 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a police report obtained by the Tribune, the victim, later identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Vanessa Hernandez of Avondale, was found lying bloody on her kitchen floor by witnesses who heard screams.

When the witnesses walked into the rear first-floor apartment, they saw a tall man standing over Hernandez with a knife in his hand, the report said. The witnesses pleaded with the man to stop and wait, but the man ran past them through the rear door with a knife in his hand and fled south on North Woodard Street.

Hernandez was able to tell the witnesses her attacker’s first name, the report said. One of the people called to the scene said the alleged attacker was “very sick” and identified the suspect.

Hernandez was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where she died from her injuries.

No one is in custody, and police are investigating.
