The Park Ridge police is investigating after two men reportedly broke into a home Tuesday night and used a “there’s a fire” ruse to try and get the residents to exit in an effort to rob the home, according to police.

In a social media post, police officials said officers responded just before midnight to a home in the 1300 block of Brophy Avenue. Residents of the home were there at the time when they “heard someone shouting that there was a fire” and admonished the residents to get out.

But, when the home occupants looked outside the home, they reportedly saw two males dressed in dark clothes standing near a back door of the house. An object was thrown through the glass on the rear door, and the burglars were “in the process of entering” the home when they were confronted by the occupants, according to the police post.

After being confronted, the two males fled, running northbound away from the home, according to police. The males are described as being between 15 to 30 years old.

No further description was provided.

Park Ridge police officers, with assistance from the Niles Police Department K9 Unit, searched the area for the two would-be burglars but did not find them, the post explains.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Park Ridge Police Department at 847-318-5252.
