The city of Aurora is launching a new program called Pets For Vets that will waive pet adoption fees for veterans.

The program is meant to provide emotional support, reduce stress and remove financial barriers for veterans looking to adopt a cat or dog, according to a city news release. Qualifying veterans will have all adoption fees waived for one dog or cat every two years, the release said.

“The Pets For Vets Program is about more than just finding homes for animals, it’s about healing hearts on both ends of the leash,” Animal Control Manager Kameron DeBoer said in the news release. “At Aurora Animal Care and Control, we’re proud to give back to those who have served by helping them experience the joy of adoption while also giving shelter pets the chance to become heroes in their own way.”

In order to qualify, veterans must present a valid Illinois driver’s license or state ID with “veteran” printed on it, a federally issued veteran ID card presented with an Illinois driver’s license, or an official DD214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with an Illinois driver’s license, according to the news release.

City officials encouraged those looking to view adoptable pets to stop by Aurora Animal Care and Control at 600 S. River Street from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday, or to visit: https://24petconnect.com/AuroraAdopt.
