Maintenance work on the Washington Street bridge, sidewalks and stairways at the Naperville Metra Station begins this week, a city of Naperville news release said.

Infrastructure construction at 105 E. 4th Ave. station will be done daily from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The project is expected to finish in December.

Robe Construction is installing the improvements, which include new ADA-compliant stairway handrails, updated wall signage and new metal panels on both sides of the Washington Street railroad bridge. The existing handrails and metal paneling need to be replaced because of rust and deterioration, according to the Naperville website.

Intermittent stairway closures from Washington Street will be needed, but one stairway will always remain open on workdays and all stairways will be open on weekends, officials said. Handrail improvements are expected to be done between Nov. 5 and 17, the website said.

Construction needed for the metal panels beneath the Washington railroad bridge is expected to take place from Nov. 17 into December. When the metal panels are being replaced, both sides of the sidewalk will be closed. A detour will direct pedestrians around the area.

“Please follow all posted signage and use caution when accessing the Washington Street sidewalk and stairways,” the release said. “If you access these areas, please allow extra time to get to the train platform.”
