A Park City man has been charged with strangling his mother to death over the weekend at their home, according to Lake County authorities.

Kenneth Rixie, 29, is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of Dorrie Gessler, 66, according to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office.

He appeared in court over the weekend and was ordered held pending a hearing where prosecutors will ask to have him detained in jail until trial.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office said that Park City police were called to the 300 block of Betty Street at about 10 a.m. Saturday for a report of a person in the roadway causing a disturbance.

Police arrived and found Rixie, who reportedly told them that he had harmed his mother. When police went to the residence that the mother and son shared, they found Gessler, who was not responsive.

She was brought to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room, the coroner’s office said. A Monday autopsy indicated death by strangulation.

The homicide remains under investigation by Park City police. Attempts to reach police on Monday were unsuccessful.
