The man killed when his truck collided with a Metra train Thursday has been identified as an Elk Grove Village resident, according to the commuter rail service.

Peter Kostopoulos, 51, was killed in the collision where the rail line intersects with Hainesville Road near Grayslake, according to Metra.

Metra spokesperson Meg Reile said Friday that the engineer on the train sounded his horn as he saw the Toyota Tundra near the crossing and began emergency braking in an attempt to avoid colliding. Reile said the train was probably going at least 50 mph before the engineer began braking.

The section of road where the rail line crosses is not publicly maintained, she said. The road leads to a private sports/shooting club.

The crossing has the x-shaped rail crossing sign, and is also marked by a stop sign, but it does not have a gate or warning alarm, Reile said.

The train was an outbound commuter, headed to Fox Lake. The crash happened between the Grayslake and Round Lake stations, authorities said. A passenger on the train was brought to a hospital with a possible knee injury associated with the train’s sudden braking.
