Children learned trick-or-treating safety tips – and got some candy in the bargain – during the Montgomery Police Department’s Halloween safety event on Oct. 18.

Along with safety tips, the annual free event included a costume contest, crafts, a touch-a-truck area, raffles and more.

“As they come in the gate, each child gets a Halloween bag to put all their candy, they get a safety tip card with punches and each time a child gets a safety tip correctly their cards are punched for the large prizes,” said Montgomery Police Cmdr. Ismael Diaz, a 21-year veteran with the police force.

Children received tips such as letting your parent or guardian look at your candy before you eat any of it and to not go inside the house of a stranger.

As for the children at the event, 11-year-old Madeline said she would use the tips she got to keep the holiday safe.

The Rotary Club of Montgomery was handing out pumpkins and decorating kits as well at the event.
