Winners of this year’s Elgin Image Awards announced

The Enhancing Elgin Committee of the Elgin Area Chamber of Commerce’s Elgin Development Group has announced the people and organizations that are the recipients of the 2025 Elgin Image Awards.

They are:

  • Excellence in DEI or Building Equity: Open Door Health Center of Illinois; Elgin Symphony Orchestra and CEO Marc Thayer;
  • Creating a Difference: Gail Borden Public Library Enrichment Services;
  • Professional Rockstar: U-46 Superintendent Suzanne Johnson; Elgin Community College baseball coach Bill Angelo;
  • Gamechanger: Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Elgin Community College; Habitat for Humanity Art Sculptural Trail;
  • Volunteer Extraordinaire: Michael McKay, Edward Jones Investments; Karen Fox, community volunteer.

“We are grateful to our Enhancing Elgin Committee, the judges and the nominators for helping us highlight the wonderful projects, organizations and people who make a lasting difference in our community,” Elgin Area Chamber President and CEO Carol Gieske said in a news release.

Ling Low appointed to Gail Borden Public Library Board

Ling Low has been appointed to the Gail Borden Public Library District Board, replacing Amy Prochot, who recently resigned, according to a news release.

Low, who will hold the seat until the term expires in April 2027, serves as a community program facilitator for the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois. She also helps with programs for Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month and organizes volunteer events for Gigi’s Playhouse and Anderson Humane.

“I am deeply honored and enthusiastic about the opportunity to serve on the Gail Borden Public Library Board of Trustees,” Low said in the release. “As a longtime resident, patron and library advocate, I look forward to contributing my skills and experience to an institution that plays such a vital role in the cultural and intellectual life of the library community.”

The Lovettes performing Saturday at The Hemmens

Chicago-based nostalgia act The Lovettes will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at The Hemmens Cultural Center in downtown Elgin.

The trio pays homage to female icons and girl groups from the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, according to the Hemmens website.They will sing songs made famous by the Andrews Sisters, Connie Francis, Peggy Lee, The Ronettes, Leslie Gore, Petula Clark, The Supremes and Dusty Springfield.

Tickets range in price from $16.50 to $31.50, plus a $3 transaction fee for orders made online.

Elgin Master Chorale launches 79th season at ECC

The Elgin Master Chorale’s 79th season, “Voices of America,” kicks off at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 2, in the Elgin Community College Arts Center’s Blizzard Theater.

Entitled “With Malice Toward None,” the program includes Morten Lauridsen’ “Lux Aeterna,” Florence Price’s “Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight” and Randall Thompson’s “The Testament of Freedom,” according to a news release.

Prior to the concert, author Bill Farina will speak with Lewis at 2:45 p.m. about his book, “Florence Price: The Life, Compositions and Influence of a Black Composer,” in the Safety Kleen Art Gallery.

Representatives from PADS of Elgin will be in the lobby to accept donations.

Tickets start at $28 and are available by going to the ECC Arts Center box office, calling 847-622-0300 or going online at eccartscenter.org/tickets. Discounts for students, teachers, active-duty and military veterans, first responders and seniors are available.

Community Crisis Center holding 50th anniversary raffle

To raise money during its 50th anniversary year, Community Crisis Center in Elgin is holding a raffle with the prize drawing held Thursday, Nov. 6.

First prize will be $5,000; second prize is $350 in restaurant gift cards; third prize is a Weber grill and ButcherBox gift certificate; and fourth prize is a $200 gift card and 18 holes of golf at the Elgin Country Club, a news release said.

Winners will be announced on the Crisis Center’s website and social media sites.

Raffle tickets are $10 each, 3 for $25 and 6 for $50. To purchase tickets, go to  www.crisiscenter.org.

The Community Crisis Center is one of the oldest domestic violence shelters in Illinois and helped organize the Illinois and National Coalitions Against Domestic Violence, according to the release.
