
‘Spooky Space’ sky show Wednesday at U-46 Planetarium
The U-46 Planetarium in Elgin will present “Spooky Space,” a Halloween season sky show, at 4:30 and 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29.
In addition to exploring space as a spooky place, the free program will include observation of the current night sky under the dome and a brief history of the building, according to the planetarium’s webpage.
Doors open at 4 p.m. and seating is first-come, first-served. Reservations are not being taken. The planetarium is at 312 Watch St.

Free Halloween candy giveaways being held this week
Three free candy giveaways will be held in the Elgin-are in the days leading up to Halloween.
- The Huffman Vendor Fair’s third annual shop-or-treat event will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, outside The Depot, 319 N. River St., East Dundee. Children can trick-or-treat while their parents shop. For information, call 847-426-2255.
- Canlan West Dundee, the West Dundee Hockey Club and West Dundee Leafs Girls Hockey will hold a free trunk-or-treat from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Canlan West Dundee parking lot, 801 Wesemann Drive, West Dundee. For information, call 847-844-8700.
- Dundee-Crown High School’s Charger Treat is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the school campus, 1500 Kings Road in Carpentersville. There will be trick-or-treating, games and a costume party is for kids 13 and younger. In lieu of admission, guests are asked to bring canned goods for the D300 Food Pantry. Elgin Coin Club’s fall coin show set for Sunday
The Elgin Coin Club will hold its fall show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, in the banquet room at the Holiday Inn, 495 Airport Road, Elgin.
The show will feature USA, Canadian and foreign coins, supplies, tokens, banknotes, ancient and gold, silver, copper, along with other numismatic items bought and sold, according to the club’s website. Free appraisals will be available.
There also will be an auction for kids who collect coins and door prizes given away each hour.
General admission is $2 for entry after 9 a.m. Early bird admission at 8 a.m. is $20.

State rep conducting diaper drive Oct. 27 through Nov. 3
State Rep. Suzanne Ness, D-Crystal Lake, is sponsoring a diaper drive from Monday, Oct. 27, through Monday, Nov. 3.
The drive kicked off with a donation of 19,000 diapers and 108 cases of baby wipes from Amazon, which will benefit families served by the D300 Food Pantry, according to a social media post.
Diapers and baby wipes can be dropped off at collection sites throughout Ness’ district, including her office, 20 S. Grove St., Carpentersville, and BodyWorks Medical Center, 754 S. 8th St., West Dundee. People can also donate through an Amazon Wish List, a.co/2y4DbJt.

Horror fiction writing workshop, reading being held at ECC
Gerardo Sámano Córdova, a novelist and artist from Mexico City, will present a horror fiction writing workshop and do a reading from his debut novel, “Monstrillo,” on Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Elgin Community College, 1700 Spartan Drive, Elgin.
The workshop is scheduled for 2 to 3:15 p.m. in Building C Room 120, according to the ECC website. The reading will take place at 7 p.m. in Building B, Room 181.
Sámano Córdova’s debut novel uses horror and the monstrous to explore the extremes of grief, love and loyalty, according to the ECC website.

Old-time radio show with scary stories at Atrium in Elgin
The Weeping Willow Players from Willow Lake Estates in Elgin will present an old-time radio show filled with spooky stories at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Atrium at Oak Crest, 204 S. State St., Elgin.
Tickets are $45 per person, which includes dinner served after the show, according to a news release. Proceeds from the event will support the Oak Crest Scholarship Fund, which benefits Oak Crest residents who have out-lived their resources.
