A shuttered South Holland elderly living facility formerly known as the Holland Home has been purchased by a California-based senior living company that plans to renovate and reopen the facility.

The facility, that last operated as Celebrate Senior Living, has sat empty since it closed it in 2024. Before its closure, it had operated continuously since 1974. But by late 2023, it had struggled with low occupancy rates and losing money consistently for years, officials said.

Comfort Living Elder Care in California purchased the property in May, according to Cook County records. The property was previously owned by the nonprofit Elevate Housing Foundation and prior to its closure was run by the for-profit Provident Healthcare Management.

South Holland Village Trustee Larry De Young, who chairs the board’s Community Development Committee, said the property was sold at auction, and all potential owners were vetted by the village.

“It appears that it’s gonna just be a retirement home again,” De Young said. “It needs a lot of upgrading before it can be used to house people again.”

De Young listed the fire suppression systems, exits and elevators as parts of the building that may need upgrades before it can be reopened.

“Hopefully, they’ll bring this up to snuff and they’ll have a real good going concern,” De Young said.

Another longtime South Holland business that closed last year, Walt’s Food Centers, may also be approaching a sale. Travis Bandstra, South Holland’s director of community development, said the Walt’s property at 162nd and State streets, is under contract, meaning a deal for its sale has been agreed on but not finalized.

“Hopefully we will have something to share on both properties in the near future,” Bandstra said in an email.
