A fire Saturday night caused about $20,000 in damage to the roof of Central Park Place, a five-story condominium building in downtown Naperville, according to the Naperville Fire Department.
Firefighters arrived at the 110 S. Washington St. location just before 8 p.m. and confirmed an active rooftop fire, officials said in a news release. Hose lines were sent up the stairwell and an aerial ladder used to access the roof while crews evacuated residents.
While the blaze remains under investigation, a contributing factor may have been a stove vent stack in Italian restaurant Gia Mia, which is located next to the condominium in the old Nichols library building, Naperville Fire Department Division Chief Daniel Smith said.
“Investigators said that they believe the fire originated from the vent stack and then spread to some of the structural members of the roof,” Smith said.
A statement issued by a Gia Mia representative said they evacuated guests and team members Saturday night and were closed Sunday.
“Thanks to the quick response of local fire officials, the situation was contained swiftly, and we are incredibly grateful that no one was injured,” the statement from Gia Mia said.
The fire was declared extinguished about 8:30 p.m., Smith said.
“When we declare a fire extinguished, we are meaning that it is fully out.” he said. “So we wanted to make sure that it wasn’t in other areas of the attic, that it wasn’t in between in the fifth floor area. It doesn’t mean that the fire was actively burning for 30 minutes. It just meant that we weren’t 100% sure to say it was fully extinguished.”
The restaurant reopened Monday, according to Gia Mia Naperville’s Facebook page. They were unable to serve their Neapolitan pizzas or half-priced pizza specials Monday, but offered $10 off discount on a future meal to anyone who dined-in.
