Elgin Police Department unveils cold case information kiosk
The Elgin Police Department has unveiled an interactive cold case information kiosk in the lobby of its building, 151 Douglas Ave., Elgin.
In a social media post, officials say the inspiration behind it is the Karen Schepers cold case, a 42-year missing person case that was solved earlier this year and for which the public contributed new information.
Schepers, 23, was reported missing in April 1983. Police detectives launched a podcast, “Somebody Knows Something,” that led to Schepers’ car and remains being located in the Fox River in March.
The kiosk provides information about unsolved Elgin homicide and missing persons’ cases. Its purpose is to give people an opportunity to know the victims’ personal stories by touching the screen, the post says. Next to the kiosk is a storyboard about the Schepers case.

East Dundee seeking public comment on new sidewalks
East Dundee is seeking residents’ feedback for an Illinois Safe Routes to School funding application it plans to submit for the construction of a sidewalk connecting the village to two schools in Carpentersville.
If approved, the funding will pay for a 5-foot wide sidewalk system along North Van Buren Street and Wilmette Avenue, from Roslyn Road to Cleveland Avenue, adjacent to Oak Ridge School and Carpentersville Middle School, according to a social media post.
The proposed sidewalk would link the schools to the existing sidewalk system, which currently ends at the intersection of North Van Buren Street and Roslyn Road.
