Human remains have been found inside a vehicle discovered Thursday in Lake Osborne, just behind the Naperville police and fire department headquarters on Aurora Avenue, officials said.
While the remains have not yet been identified, it’s been confirmed the 1992 Nissan Maxima was “connected to an ongoing Berwyn Police Department investigation into the disappearance of Hiep Luu, who was reported missing in 2003,” a news release from the Naperville and Berwyn police departments said.
The DuPage County coroner’s office is working to identify the victim, the release said.
Naperville Fire Department divers conducting training exercises in Lake Osborne came upon the submerged vehicle shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday. It was removed from the water about 3:40 p.m. and is being held at the Naperville Police Evidence Garage, Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow said.
Police were able to link the car to the Berwyn case through its license plate number, the release said.
Naperville police are handling the death investigation in cooperation with Berwyn police, which is handling the missing person case. Police divers returned to the scene Friday to search for additional evidence.
Anyone with information in the death investigation should call NPD’s investigations division at 630-420-4138. Information relevant to the missing person case should be provided to the Berwyn police investigations division at 708-795-2160.
