The Lake County Coroner’s office has identified the man who died after being shot in a Saturday officer-involved shooting in New Chicago.

The coroner’s office said in a release that Benjamin Scott, 64, of the 200 block of Huber Boulevard, died at the scene from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead about 4:30 p.m.

The shooting is under investigation by the Indiana State Police. On Tuesday, a state police release said two officers fired at a man inside the home.

About 3:30 p.m. Saturday, New Chicago police and Hobart Fire Department paramedics responded to the address for a call involving a deceased person, identified Tuesday as Aaron Onohan, 45, of the Huber Boulevard address. After an autopsy, the coroner’s office said he died from acute cardiac arrest and ruled the cause of death as natural causes.

The coroner’s office said Scott and Onohan were roommates.

A Saturday state police release said the co-owner of the residence, who called 911, became agitated with police who requested an ambulance respond to the scene for a psychological evaluation on the agitated individual.

About 4:30 p.m., New Chicago Police radioed to dispatch that shots were fired inside the residence and the agitated subject was later found deceased inside the residence by officers and medics. No officers were injured during the incident.

Once the investigation is completed, it will be turned over to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

New Chicago Police Chief Earl Mayo said in a statement that the officers involved were placed on paid administrative duty. He said they would be identified after state police investigators interview them.
