None of the people killed were students, Berwyn North School District 98 Supt. Michelle Smith said in a statement.
Berwyn police officers responded to the school, 6432 16th St., after hearing gunfire near the west suburban campus around 4:05 p.m., police said in a news release.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man firing a rifle into another vehicle just before firing shots at responding officers as they approached, according to police. The officers took cover and did not return fire, authorities added.
The shooting ended with the deaths of three people at the scene, including the gunman, who died in “what we believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound on scene,” Berwyn police Division Commander Michael Fellows said.
The situation appears to be “domestic-related,” authorities said, adding that all parties involved had been accounted for and there was no ongoing danger.
No identities had been released by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as of Tuesday night.
Lincoln Middle School was placed on a “hard lockdown” during the shooting, but no other injuries were reported, authorities said.
The school canceled classes for Wednesday, Smith said in a note on the school’s website.
“None of the individuals killed were students from Lincoln Middle School,” the note said. “This was a domestic incident and there is no ongoing threat to the school community.”
She also wrote that “students are encouraged to come to school if they need to process today’s events.” She said social workers and counselors would be available and that students would be allowed to enter and exit the building as needed.
The West Suburban Major Crimes Task Force forensic team remained on scene processing evidence Tuesday night as the investigation remained ongoing, police said.
