A broad-daylight shooting in Chicago’s Loop Wednesday morning was the result of an attempted robbery targeting an armed security guard, according to a police report.

A Brinks security guard was walking out of a Saks Off 5th store, located at 6 S. State St., around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday with a bag of cash when a second man came up to him, tried to grab the bag and punched the guard in the jaw, the report stated.

As the man started to run north on State Street, the guard fired at the man and hit him at least once, the report stated. Police later found three shell casings at the scene of the shooting, per the report.

Officers found the alleged robber shortly afterward with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a statement from the department. He was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition, officials said.

Charges were still pending against the suspect as of Thursday morning.
