Five people were critically injured and one was killed after a smash-and-grab at a downtown Louis Vuitton store and multiple traffic crashes early Thursday morning, officials said.
Ald. Brian Hopkins, 2nd, said a pickup truck had driven into the store, located at 919 N. Michigan Ave. in Streeterville, and that at least three other vehicles were involved in the apparent attempted burglary.
As one group of alleged burglars drove south on Michigan, their vehicle ran a red light and struck an uninvolved car, killing the driver, Chicago police said. Another car driving away from the alleged break-in got into a crash at the intersection of Roosevelt Road and DuSable Lake Shore Drive. Police said officers arrested two of the four men inside as they started to run away.
Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt said three men were taken to Stroger Hospital and another three were taken to Northwestern University Hospital after they were hurt in the crash at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and East Ohio Street around 3:30 a.m.
Five were in critical condition, Merritt said. Police said the driver of a car struck in the Michigan Avenue intersection, a man in his 40s, was later pronounced dead.
Late last month, a group of 10 unknown men traveling in multiple cars allegedly took almost $130,000 worth of Louis Vuitton merchandise from a Nordstrom department store, located a few blocks from the Magnificent Mile at 55 E. Grand Ave., according to a police report. No arrests have been reported in that case.
