Three people were injured in a shooting on the 15100 block of Cornell Avenue in Dolton Tuesday night, and no suspects are in custody, according to a Dolton spokesperson.

Meanwhile, one person was taken was taken into custody, after a shooting in Calumet City involved police, a spokesperson there said.

All victims in Dolton were taken to area hospitals, where they are reported to be in critical condition, the village said.

The spokesperson said the shooting occurred as about 20 to 35 people gathered for a balloon release honoring a former resident, according to preliminary investigation.

The shooter, whose identity is still unknown, came out of nearby bushes during the gathering and opened fire, discharging about 30 to 40 rounds, according to the spokesperson.

Dolton police responded to reports of gunfire at 7:12 p.m. and collected evidence, the spokesperson said.

“Our hearts are heavy today. My deepest prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted,” Mayor Jason House said in a statement. “We are working closely with law enforcement to ensure accountability, and we stand united as a community in this difficult time.”

As of Wednesday morning, no suspects were in custody, and investigations were ongoing.

The Illinois State Police Crime Scene Unit was notified and is assisting with the investigation.

In Calumet City, there was active gunfire between multiple individuals when police arrived about 7 p.m. on the 400 block of Buffalo Avenue, spokesperson Sean Howard said.

While responding, the 911 caller reported shots fired which were heard by the 911 dispatcher while on the phone, Howard said.

One person refused a police order to drop a firearm, and officers shot their weapons, but did not strike anyone, according to Howard.

Two people fled the scene, and one person was taken into custody. Investigators found two firearms on the scene, he said.

Howard asked anyone with information or video footage related to the shooting to contact the Calumet City Police Department.

Howard said the shooting was unfortunate, especially given the city’s quiet summer.

“This particular community has hit a pretty much quiet summer and it’s just unfortunate that we have a few bad characters,” Howard said.
