1918: Boston Red Sox lefty Babe Ruth outpitched Jim Vaughn of the Chicago Cubs to win Game 1 of the 1918 World Series at Comiskey Park. Ruth also won Game 4 by a 3-2 score over Phil Douglas in Boston as the Red Sox won the Series four games to two.
It was the Red Sox’s last World Series title until 2004 (they also won in 2007, 2013 and 2018). The Series was moved up to early September because the season was shortened because of World War I. The Cubs played in Comiskey because of its larger seating capacity.
1964: The Beatles played in Chicago for the first time, at the International Amphitheatre.
2007: Philanthropist Ann Lurie gave $100 million to Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. After a subsequent move from Lincoln Park to Streeterville, it was renamed the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital.
