The arrest of a man in the Naperville Topgolf parking lot last week brings the total number of arrests on gun-related charges at the venue to 15 for the year.
Johnny Lee Cameron Wright, 20, of Hazel Crest, was taken into custody by Naperville police Aug. 21 on one count each of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon without an FCCA or FOID card.
Officers conducting a foot patrol of the Topgolf parking lot at 3211 Odyssey Court about 10:30 p.m. Aug. 21 observed a handgun in plain view inside an unoccupied Kia Forte, Naperville police spokeswoman Kelley Munch said.
Upon further investigation, they learned the registered owner of the vehicle, identified as Wright, did not possess a valid FOID card or a concealed carry license, Munch said. He also had a previous felony conviction out of Indiana.
The officers waited until Wright returned to vehicle to ask him about the weapon, which they removed as part of the arrest.
Wright was denied pre-trial release by a DuPage County judge, according to court records. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 15.
Less than two weeks earlier, Jaylen A. Dixon, 21, of University Park, was arrested at 12:13 a.m. Aug. 10 and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a rifle under 16 inches in length/shotgun under 18 inches.
Officers again were doing a routine foot patrol of the Topgolf parking lot when they observed a rifle inside a vehicle in plain view, Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow said. Police arrested Dixon when he returned to his car.
Dixon had a valid FOID card but did not have a concealed carry license, Krakow said. He was granted pre-trial release and is next scheduled to appear in court Sept. 23, court records said.
Before that, the last person to be arrested on a gun-related charge in the Topgolf lot was Jimmie Harris-Clay, 33, of Pembroke Township, on June 21. Harris-Clay was charged with aggravated unlawful possession of a loaded weapon with no FCCA or FOID card, unlawful possession of cannabis by a driver, unlawful possession of alcohol by a driver and operating a motor vehicle with suspended registration.
In this case, officers conducting a foot patrol of the lot when observed open alcohol and a firearm in plain view inside an unoccupied vehicle, Munch said. When searching the vehicle’s registration, they learned it was expired, she said.
A man and a woman returned to the vehicle after midnight and were stopped by the officers before they could leave the parking lot, according to court records. The handgun, open alcohol and cannabis were recovered and Harris-Clay arrested, Munch said.
He was granted pre-trial release. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 8.
