Mentoring program provides school supplies in Matteson
About 50 families in need received school supplies this month thanks to a shopping trip by Matteson School District 162 administrators supported by the Making Disciples Boys Mentoring Program.
The south suburban organization has partnered with the school district for the past six years, this year giving $3,000 for everything from backpacks to notebooks to earbuds.
Matteson School District 162 director of special education Jaime Goodley and assistant director Rebecca Dixon shopped for supplies with Eric Bassette, who founded Making Disciples with his wife, Annette, in 2015. Bassette also bought items for two families shopping at WalMart that afternoon.
“We like being able to give back to the community. Education is essential for our children’s well being and development,” Eric Bassette shared in a news release.

Plum Creek Nature Center hosts Festival of Arts
The Forest Preserve District of Will County’s new Festival of Arts, set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 23 at Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete Township, allows participants to experience how nature fuels creativity.
“All of the activities that will be happening are connecting nature and a form of art, whether that’s visual, audiovisual or culinary arts,” said Heather Van Zyl, the center’s facility supervisor. “We’re having different folks out to offer activities, and there’s going to be a musical zoo where people can try out different instruments. We’re connecting that to bird calls and insect calls – things you hear in nature. We’re going to have yoga happening, focusing on movement of animals. How does movement connect with animals?”
Cooking demonstrations, prairie-related art by Carrie Carlson and “en plein air” painting are among the activities planned, and items will be sold. “If anyone is interested in art or nature or just having a great time, you should come out for our festival,” Van Zyl urged.
The nature center is at 27064 S. Dutton Road, north of Goodenow Road near Beecher. Information is at ReconnectWithNature.org.
